SKYROADS BOX ART

Anyone who uses Boxer for DOSBox emulation will be familiar with the shelf-style display at the game selection screen.

I've recently been tidying up my games and noticed that a few were missing their box artwork. I then sourced a few of the boxes from the website Moby Games but unfortunately there was nothing for one of my favourite games, 1993's SkyRoads by Estonian Blue Moon. SkyRoads had never received a commercial release, and thus never had a retail box.

At this stage I decided to make my own SkyRoads box art, in the style of other DOS games from early nineties. For a touch of authenticity, a sticker for the SkyRoads XMAS Special was added to the cover. It was fairly common to bunch in expansions and other additions in retail boxes at the time.

So there you have it. Incidentally, Blue Moon Interactive went on to develop early P2P software such as Kazaa and Skype. You can download a version of SkyRoads to play yourself on their website.

SHO GALLERY

Just a quick update on the exhibition in the SHO Gallery for Made in Roath.

I exhibited two new pieces as part of a new body of work.

Webcam en plein air 1, Tramore, May 2014 and Webcam en plein air 2, Belfast, May 2014.

The painting of Belfast won an award. The exhibition was judged by Chris from g39 and Ben Borthwick, formerly of Tate Artes Mundi.

I will be exhibiting some new work at the SHO Gallery in Cardiff as part of the Made in Roath arts festival.

More details to come but the exhibition runs from the 15th to the 29th of October.

DayZ en plein air NEW WORK

I have just completed a new batch of en plein air paintings from DayZ.

The pieces have been added to my website where you can view the whole series, but for now here are a few pieces:

I like that a number of scenes from DayZ bring up recurring themes in my own work- watchtowers, checkpoints, petrol stations, water, abandoned buildings. I think I might retire this project for now, seven pieces makes for an interesting body of work.

Also- here is a super work in progress panorama, where you can see a little of the processes involved. With a project like DayZ en plein air I think it is important to understand the physical nature of painting like this.
